Tailoring and Stitching Courses
With the donor help of the Global Church Ministries of the Netherlands, Kyetume CBHCP was able to purchase 15 Singer Hand-Sewing Machines in 1997. The tailoring classes are targeted toward OVCs and women without work. To participate in the course, students only have to supply their own materials and a letter from the Local Council Committee (LOC).
Usually the class is filled with 15 students per term. There are three terms per year, and each term as a different focus: straight dress, prince dress, prince blouse, shirts with elastic, V-neck blouse, shorts, panel skirt, rounded skirt, straight skirts, school uniform, baby pant, baby dress, or double yolk. Beginners and experts alike are welcomed; both are accommodated by the instructors.
The cost for the class is
Registration: 2000 ush
ID Card: 2000 ush
And for non-OVCs, tuition is 15,000 ush per term.
After students complete the tailoring course, they use their skills to stitch their own clothing, make clothes to sell, or to tailor professionally.
A new addition to the tailoring course at the resource center is the bark cloth class that was started in June 2009. Students of this course learn to make wall hangings, bookmarks, bags, picture frames, and table mats with embroidery using obuso thread on the bark cloth.
